Tropea

Tropea, also called the ‘Precious pearl of the Mediterranean Sea’ is a picturesque beach town often described as the most beautiful among the popular vacation spots in Italy. The sparkling sea and the white beaches compete easily with other exclusive holiday resorts.

According to a legend, Tropea was founded by Hercules, and originally called ‘Porto d’Ercole’ – port of Hercules. It is said that he stayed here to relax between his adventures. The name ‘Tropea’ appears for the first time during the 5th century. In the centuries to follow, the name was synonym with frequent Saracen attacks in this area. Later, during the Norman period, Tropea developed into a densely populated and rich town. During the feudal middle ages it became the residence of many noble families; though it was under the direct supervision of the king of Naples. Almost the entire urban center of the 17th century has been preserved.
Today, the symbol of Tropea is the church of Santa Maria dell’Isola that is perched on a rocky peninsula just below the historic city center.
Narrow stone paved alleys link small hidden plazas along the tall stone homes and several churches.

Interesting sights in Tropea:

The unique church Santa Maria dell’Isola is located on a rocky peninsula, unfortunately a visit of this sight is not possible anymore due to danger of collapse but the panoramic view of this place from Sea and shore is an absolute highlight.
Also worth seeing is the museum of the historical professions of Calabria.
From every angle of the old town the perspective changes between monuments and breathtaking views of the sea. Everyone will be thrilled by the charm and beauty of this town.
